Sportsreach (Youthreach)

What is Youthreach?

YOUTHREACH is an integral part of the national programme of second-chance education and training in Ireland and is a central part of the Government's contribution to the achievement of a lifelong learning society.

The programme is directed at unemployed young early school leavers aged 15-20. It offers participants the opportunity to identify and pursue viable options within adult life, and provides them with opportunities to acquire certification. It operates on a full-time, year-round basis.

What do we do in Sportsreach?

Sportsreach is a Youthreach Centre located in St. Joseph’s Boys Football Club in Sallynoggin. Sportsreach is a full-time two year programme for young people aged 15-20 who have left school without full certification. The programme consists of three elements: an academic programme, a sports & recreation programme and a life skills Programme .Central to the Sportsreach programme is the Special Educational Needs Initiative (SEN). The SEN Initiative is based on the web wheel approach: a method of one to one mentoring which allows staff to assess the needs of each of the learners and tailor the programme accordingly. As a result of this initiative a number of additional supports were put in place to support the learners including: literacy/ numeracy support and psychological support.

The academic programme consists of modules at FETAC levels 3-5 and Junior Certificate where required. Modules include:

• Maths
• Communications
• personal effectiveness
• soccer
• health related fitness
• IT skills
• Word Processing
• Art & Design
• Drawing.

Anything else I need to know?

Breakfast is provided every morning before classes begin and learners receive a weekly training allowance. All learners are encouraged to participate in sporting activities on a daily basis. Showering facilities and fresh sportswear are provided each day.

Referrals are accepted from Local Schools, the Education Welfare Officer, Social Workers, the Health Service Executive , the Gardai, probation Services and other agencies/services working with young people. Parents are also welcome to make a referral.

Youthreach is funded by the Department of Education and Science with the assistance of the European Social Fund, as part of the National Development Plan 2007-2013.
