Infant Matters is a unique programme aimed at supporting the relationship between young parents and their infants. This evidence-based initiative is the first of its kind in Ireland and draws on high levels of interagency collaboration from The Local Drugs Task Force, Dún Laoghaire VEC, the County Childcare Committee and Southside Partnership.
The programme emerged from the gap in services for young parents and their children along with our knowledge that the parent infant relationship is a key factor in the lifelong health and well-being of children. Research has shown that responding to the needs of infants and regulating their emotions appropriately is paramount in the first weeks, months and years of life.
Parents and babies attend up to fifteen two-hour group sessions once a week. This gives them the opportunity to meet other young parents, receive support and information and put learning into practice in a warm and supportive environment.
This is carried out in a variety of ways including infant massage, play, feeding, bathing and peer support sessions.
Highly skilled professionals provide facilitation and childcare while individual counselling is also on hand for those who wish to avail of it.
On completion of these sessions participants are offered monthly sessions for up to a year, after which, it is hoped that parents might form and drive the group themselves.
This programme is funded through the Local Drugs Task Force and is currently undergoing external evaluation.
