Dún Laoghaire VEC provides a wide range of services and supports to enable the delivery of a variety of programmes, projects and services to young people. This is done in partnerships with voluntary groups, voluntary youth organisations and other national service providers.
Under the Youth Work Act 2001, Vocational Educational Committees were given statutory responsibility for the development of youth work in their area. As a result, Dún Laoghaire VEC has responsibility for co-ordinating youth work provision and targeting resources to develop quality programmes for young people in the area.
Youth Work refers to a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young people through their voluntary involvement. This is complementary to their formal education and training and provided primarily by voluntary youth organisations.
Dún Laoghaire VEC provides co-ordination, advice, training and information to all groups working with young people and also administers a number of grant schemes which support the development and provision of youth work programmes and services in the area. The VEC is responsible for monitoring and evaluating Youth service provision in the region.
There are over 8,000 young people engaged in youth work programmes, services and activities in the Dún Laoghaire area, with over 460 voluntary youth leaders providing a much needed service to the borough.
