The SKILLVEC Programme

SKILLVEC is a national workplace education programme focused on the design and delivery of FETAC Level 3, 4, 5 & 6 accredited programmes for Support Staff and Line Managers/Supervisors within the HSE.

Objectives of SKILLVEC Programme

Participation in a SKILLVEC programme benefits Support Staff and Supervisors through:

  • Improved knowledge and skills
  • Greater clarity of roles and functions
  • Increased morale, motivation, mobility and flexibility
  • Educational accreditation and enhanced career opportunities

The organisation benefits through:

  • Improved quality and standards of service and care
  • Up-skilled staff capable of fulfilling higher level duties where appropriate

SKILLVEC at Dún Laoghaire VEC

Dún Laoghaire VEC currently runs SKILLVEC Programmes at Level 3/4 and at Level 5.

Level 3/4

The Level 3 Programme is delivered in the Adult Learning Centre, based in Sallynoggin.  It is aimed at learners who may be returning to education after many years absence and who may need additional supports to make a success of their programme. These learners may begin with a course at Level 3 or 4 and later progress to the level 5 or 6 course.

Level 5

The Level 5 award consists of 8 modules of study.  Each module contains 20 hours of class contact.  The learners are required to attend classroom based sessions in a local VEC (or OTC/UCD for specific modules).  Each module or subject is assessed on a range of learning outcomes.

All learners undertake 5 core modules and 3 elective modules based on their job/role.

Further information on modules is available from the SKILL Project website.

How to join SKILLVEC Programme

The SKILLVEC Programme is open only to employees of the HSE.  Discuss your wish to participate on a SKILL programme with your line manager who will provide details on programme contents and enrolment procedures. For most HSE agencies there are local processes established for support staff to enrol on SKILL programmes. These are mainly through the HR / Personnel / Performance and Development Departments.

Further information on the SKILLVEC Programme can be obtained on the SKILL Project website
