We are the Adult Literacy Service for Dún Laoghaire VEC. We offer a range of classes and courses in the Adult Learning Centre, in the Holy Child Community School in Sallynoggin. We also have classes in other locations. Our service is free and confidential.
We can help you if you feel that:
We know many adults who want to return to learning may be nervous about going into a group class. We offer adults the chance to work on their own with a tutor for help with English, reading, spelling, writing or maths.
You can do as many or as few classes as you like. Classes are usually two hours long and are held once a week.
Subject areas include: English, spelling, handwriting skills, maths and computers skills. ECDL Certification (European Computer Driving Licence) is available for interested students.
When a learner is ready to move on, we offer part-time courses that allow the learner to continually improve their English, maths or computer skills. Courses include:
For those interested in obtaining a qualification, we offer a range of FETAC Modules at Level 3 and Level 4.
If English is not your first language, the Adult Learning Centre provides English language classes. We offer:
Classes are run during usual term times for two hours per week. Some classes may be free depending on individual circumstances.
We also provide Literacy Awareness Training and run a training programme for our Volunteer Tutors.
We offer free Literacy Awareness Training to organisations seeking information and training on how to support end-users who are experiencing literacy difficulties. This training is usually free and can be delivered in either the Adult Learning Centre or in the organisation itself. We offer individual support to local agencies or individuals concerning all aspects of adult literacy.
One-to-one tuition is provided in the Centre by volunteer tutors. The Adult Learning Centre runs a volunteer programme to train people to work as one-to-one adult literacy tutors. The tutors are then supported in their work with adult learners in the Centre.
The Centre relies heavily on volunteer tutors to deliver the literacy service and we always welcome enquiries from anyone interested in working as a volunteer tutor.
The training programme for volunteers is delivered over an eight week period. This involves one evening per week and two full Saturdays. Free training programmes are run during the Spring and Autumn term. Places are allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.
Further information is available from the Adult Learning Centre.
